I had always owned dogs and a quick trip to the groomer once every couple of months was all I knew. I didn't know about the paper thin hair of the Persian cat, or how very quickly they matted up and once matted, I didn't know what psychological trauma it was for both cat and owner to endure. When I brought home Paco full of mattes down to his skin to the point of pain I didn't know what to do short of taking him to a groomer to get totally shaved. Paco was a rescue and although very loved by his previous owner, he fur had not been taken care of. I learned alot folks by just my love and desire to maintain the Persian cat with it's glamorous fur. On my site you can see Madison who is my White female and let me tell you it is all I can to do maintain her fur. Some days it is a challenge to keep her calm enough to be groomed without getting my arms and hands shredded. Madison is another rescue and I am not sure what had happened in her past but she really does not like being touched. So go figure huh?

I am writing this blog because I see where there are people out there that are in need of grooming tips and I would love to be able to help them with their fur babies with advise. God knows I needed alot of advise with mine.

Feel free to contact me via email or leave a response and I will try to give you answers.

Julie
http://aboutpersiancats.com

My Persians

Until 10 years ago, I was a dog person. I was convinced that a cat could not be loyal as a dog. They were independent and standoffish and really were too impersonal. How wrong I was... As I type this blog my female cat Madison is asking to get into my lap. She is starring at me and insisting I pay attention to her. My Persians have totally shown me my misconception of the Persian cat.

Grooming is a very important happening in our house. To keep these Persians beautiful they MUST be groomed often. This includes nail trimming and brushing. I have found that the best tool to use for brushing is a good undercoat rake.
>Click here to purchase a rake.

I will now address a very difficult area and that is the question of whether or not to declaw. My answer is ADAMANTLY NO PLEASE DON'T!!! This is inhuman and totally not necessary folks. I have 6 Persian cats and a House full of leather furniture and there has never been an incident. I believe in and have used a product called soft claws very successfully for my kittens. They glue on the cats nails preventing their sharp nails from tearing anything. Make sure that there is always a scratching post for your cats as it is a natural thing for them to want to scratch.
